Where did you get the name "Pure Nard"?

Nard was one of the most precious of substances in ancient times.

Extremely valued by early Egyptian, Hebrew, and Hindu civilizations, ointments of "pure nard" were created from the naladam plant of the Himalayas, and was used for both ritual and medicinal purposes in these societies.

Reknowned for its is calming scent, nard was said to promote awareness and strengthen the mind.

The most famous use of nard is perhaps in the biblical story where Mary Magdalene runs in to the house where Jesus is eating, carrying a year's wages' worth of pure nard. Now, in Hebrew society, nard was often used as a perfume for use in preparing bodies for burial. Even though Jesus had been telling his followers how he must die to save humankind, Mary is the only one who truly believes he is going to die. She pours the nard on Jesus feet and then wipes his feet with her hair as a passionate gesture of devotion, knowing that within a week he will be killed.

So not only is pure nard one of the most valuable substances of antiquity, but it evokes a potent picture of sacrifice and passion.

A Brief History of Pure Nard

It was the summer of 2001, and Adam King (vocals, guitar), fresh out of high school, had been jamming with his friend Jon Grime (drums, percussion, piano), cooking up a couple songs for a local coffeehouse in Brantford. Around this time their buds Mike Nicholson (guitars, BGV's) and Jared Korstanje (bass, percussion) offered their skills, and a band was formed.

As the fall approached, their new band came public with their unique brand of music. Since then, Pure Nard has played many shows across Southern Ontario, and in particular has developed a strong local fan base in the Brantford/Cambridge Ontario region, with fans often traveling hours just to see them play.

In July of 2002, Pure Nard decided to take a break from playing shows in order to songwrite and refine their presence as a band. Now, however, they are returning to the scene with new material and new vigor, looking forward to an approaching recorded project and an endless possiblities before them.

What other artists can Pure Nard be compared to? Sorry, can't help a whole lot on this question! We've tried to think of bands with similar styles, but as of yet no clear choices come to mind. The best we can do is a few limited comparisons to such groups as Jimmy Eat World, Matthew Good Band, Dashboard Confessional, and the Juliana Theory.
